about

Liana Yangis rarely motivated by direct beauty, but drawn to the aesthetics of social interactionsand oddities we encounter in our daily experiences. This includes the enigmaticand unseen aspects of relationships, as well as explorations of memory andassociations in contemporary culture.  Her research has revolved heavily around observations in photography and contemporary culture, such as social apps and online media, such as modern romance and labour.

Bycombining photography, video, sound, and found objects, her methodologiesusually employ subversions with sexual references and objectification. Aprocess she hopes will offer a compelling discourse in understanding societalviews.

Her works have been showcased at Chobi Mela International Festival of Photography, Bangladesh, Noorderlicht International Photofestival, The Netherlands, Arles Photography Open Salon, France, Singapore Art Museum@8Q and Warsaw Photo Days, Poland.  Her three self-published photobooks were selected and showcased internationally, such as The Photobook Shows in Brighton, UK, Helsinki, Finland, Malmo, Sweden and Tokyo, Japan, and in her hometown, Singapore.

“My fascination with using sex as a visual language attributes from my upbringing that sex is associated with all things wrong. It is this deterrence that makes sex all the more compelling and intriguing. The works tries to propose a non-bias approach to how we understand our social fabric, hopefully opening up multiple perspectives in relation to sex.”
